the art of getting married

Friday, February 18th, 2011

I love February weddings because they are typically not your traditional girls with church weddings. They are out of the box, intimate affairs that are creative and beautiful.

Krystel and Mitch were no different, they even bumped it up a notch and had their wedding at the Art Emporium in downtown Knoxville. It was a gorgeous wedding with amazing details. Krystel showed her creativity because she planned this wedding in 2 weeks when their elopement plans to the Dominican Republic fell through (they are still going as a honeymoon but just couldn’t get married there) and boy did she rock it out!

instead of a unity candle or sand ceremony, Krystel and Mitch wanted to do something different. So they did a God’s Knot, where the three strands represent bride, groom, and God are braided together. Very cool.

ok…I am in love with these three pictures! These two just work it for the camera without even trying. They are just natural and Krystel’s smile and laugh is amazing!

and one of my favorite ring shots ever:) Their dinner was catered by Full Service BBQ (who was amazing! Seriously, if you ever need BBQ catered he is the best!) because BBQ is their favorite. And this is why I love Krystel even more…she relishes in the abnormal like myself:)

kanya + martin: a couples session

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Kanya and Martin had a photography session with me just because. And I love that! They are married and have a family but wanted to celebrate them. How awesome is that! I’m a big fan of couples getting their pictures done even in family sessions because so often we overlook the romance of it all when kids come in the picture.

So we had a great time in the Old City in Knoxville because Kanya likes cool buildings and alleys just as much as me:) And they rocked it with their couple photos, don’t you think:)

on a side note, yesterday I got the news that I was featured on All the Photographers, a blog that features photographers from around the world. I answered some of their fun questions and then they went through and picked out some of their fave pictures from recent sessions:) A big thanks to Jon at All the Photographers for being awesome!

clifton + lesli=engaged

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Clifton and Lesli are awesome. Remember these photos? We could end there. But we won’t:) They are engaged and getting married in June and we celebrated with a little engagement session and rocking photos. It was another beautiful evening with gorgeous light here in Knoxville and Lesli was kind enough to be ok with me asking her to roll around in all the nature of the Knoxville Arboretum. I think it was all worth it:)

courtney and will: engaged

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Courtney and Will are engaged and getting married in Knoxville in the fall! I was super excited to do their engagement photos because, well, they are awesome! Courtney loves out of the box creative pictures so I knew we were a good match:) And I also soon learned that Will is hilarious. Half of the time I was cracking up at the expressions he was making. You’ll see:) We went to a couple different spots here in Knoxville for their engagement photos including the arboretum and a few random spots along the road in downtown Knoxville.

Oh, and did I mention that the light that day was delicious and yummy!

lovelovelove this one! Hilarious!

and saving my favorite for last. LOVE these two! I was playing around with some lens and just being a little bit crazy and LOVE it! I love that they are so old world looking and almost ethereal.

Will and Courtney, you guys rock! Thanks so much for trusting me with your engagement pictures!

Are you engaged or just want some awesome couple photos?

five on friday | where to shoot photography

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Where do you shoot at? Do you have a go to for your photo sessions?

This week I’ve been thinking on locations to shoot photography sessions at and trying to get some out of the box ideas going. Knoxville has some great locations but this isn’t a huge city so it seems like all the good, popular ones are overused and busy. So….here are some of my thought processes in coming up with some fun locations! This isn’t Knoxville specific, just to get ideas flowing… enjoy! Your homework can be to grab your kid, dog, hubby, client, or heck, a cool jar or something and go to a new location and try it out!

1. Think out of the box. So often we gravitate towards parks and downtown, the normal things. Now, while that is all well and good (and talked about more down below), challenge yourself to pick something new, something different for you. Or if you go with the old standby of the park, shoot it completely different so this session doesn’t look like the last one at all!

2. Downtown. Ok… way overused here in Knoxville and I am guilty as charged on this location too. I LOVE the urban cool brick and texture look, the dirty alleys, love it! But there are some of you reading that may have never shot a session downtown in your town. Do it! If you are a downtown junkie like me, then either find those corners in downtown that are new to you or broaden your horizon from downtown.

Here is my tip for downtown: Pick a meeting place for you and your clients. Then plan out before you meet them of where you are going to walk (I usually make it a circle around a couple blocks or at least end up where we started), one that has some things you know you can shoot and then keep your eyes open for new spaces along your path as you go. THEN, next client you meet downtown do the same thing but choose a different route! Then you aren’t shooting the same thing every time.

3. Parks. Yes, there is the ever popular UT Gardens in Knoxville. And I’m sure you have them in your town if you aren’t local…those places that are the #1 spot for portrait photographers to have their sessions at and you always see 5 of them when you are there. Here is my challenge…pick a different location! Think outside the box on parks….go to a less popular one you, look into spaces that aren’t necessarily parks (we have the Smokies near Knoxville that give great beautiful places to go)

4. Ask your clients! I always have a conversation about location with my clients. I first ask them what interests them (ie…do they love hiking, do they bowl every week as a family). See if something sparks an interesting location in that conversation. I mean, imagine doing a photo shoot at a bowling alley for a family that loves to bowl…how cool are you and what great memories you just made for them!!

5. The family farm. This goes with #4 but thought it needed its own #:) Some of the best photos come from where your clients live. So after asking about their interests, ask if they have land, know of a cool place that is in their family, etc. Family sessions with babies are the best at their houses I think because it’s memories of their space, the babies toys, room….how awesome is that! fun story: I was talking to one of my bride’s this year the other day about their engagement photos and the location. She mentioned they got engaged at her grandpa’s farm…so we are doing the shoot there! Memories for them to last a lifetime plus an awesome backdrop for me to work with…its a win/win!

ok…now get out there and scout out new locations to shoot at!! Hope this was helpful!

sarah and andrew (knoxville couple photographer)

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Sarah is a local Knoxville photographer and an awesome person (as is her hubby too!) I’m pretty sure we need to be friends:) We made our way to downtown Knoxville to get some fun couple photographs in as well as a couple of Sarah with her camera. I have been dying to do some pics in a garage and Sarah and Andrew were game plus we played around with some light. Check out the last picture…I think it may be my fave!

It was one of those days that was either going to be awesome or a washout, depending on if the weatherman was right or not. Turned out he was wrong again so we lucked out and the rain held off for some awesome photographs in downtown Knoxville! Enjoy the sneak peek!
