mini session sneak peek | Lowery’s

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The holiday season is fast approachinghere and mini sessions have been all the rage here in Knoxville for families getting their portraits done for their Christmas cards. Even though mini sessions are limited a little in time I always try to sneak a little artsy fun pictures in there above just the family portrait. Makes the mini session even that better of a deal, family portraits plus some photos of you and your family that are so much more than a portrait, they are you being you! Capturing the smiles and fun of a family being themselves, love it!

So, we made our way to the UT Gardens here in Knoxville for this family portrait mini session. Here are a couple of my fave “non-portraits” :)

You know those days/weeks/months where you know God is weaving together some larger message to you. Where one simple song, one thought, one message, one experience all feel like they are interconnected and you are sure there is a message in there somewhere but its like putting a puzzle together and each little piece you see more. That is how this last week has been for me. I’m not sure if its the holiday season and my mind just goes to everything out there that you can do to help….or is it me working on some personal issues…I have no idea what its all about but here is what is on my heart….here are my puzzle pieces.

Puzzle piece #1: I read this blog and have mentioned it on here before. Her journey amazes and inspires me. Check out her post here for some of the background of this amazing life. Although each and every post on that blog speaks to me in more ways than one, this one just resonated in me.

Grace is maybe 60 years old but looks to be pushing 100. She can’t weigh more than 85 pounds. Grace is a mother to six children, but 4 have died of AIDS and the other two have deserted her for a better life. She lives in a 4 by 4 foot room that is pitch black, but she doesn’t mind; in addition to being to weak to walk, Grace is blind. She NEVER has any visitors. At night her bones ache against the hard dirt floor and her feeble body shivers with cold. A cough racks her body and her stomach rumbles in hunger making sleep impossible.

Its sad, huh? How sad though? Sad enough that we want to do sometime about it? Sad enough that we will remember Grace tonight as we snuggle down into our beds or next month as we pay the bills? Maybe. But maybe not. Because it hurts, but it doesn’t hurt that much. It doesn’t hurt the way it would if Grace was your grandmother all alone there in the dark. It does for God. Because Grace is His.

Puzzle piece #2: I got the privilege of going to Casting Crowns this week with some girls (thanks girls for inviting me along!!) It was an amazing concert that was more of a worship service. It was challenging to me in more ways than one…it was a call to action, I think peopleI get bogged down in the thought of the whole picture like changing the world but what it really takes is one step, one action to start making a difference. How are you going to change the world when you can’t even do one thing a day that makes a difference in this world? Two things that stood out…
-”I want to sign Your name to the end of this day knowing that my heart was true”
-”sing until the whole world hears” (The background to this song is that the lead singer had a mentor who would write back and forth to him. Every letter was signed “sing until the whole world hears”. Love that!)

The whole song “until the whole world hears” is awesome! Here it is…

Puzzle piece #3: I love quotes. I think I’ve mentioned that on here before. My fave is “be the change you wish to see in this world”. Love it. It gets me every time because you could think on those 10 words forever and it always pushes you to be more.

I ran into a quote the other day that was like that. So simple and so thoughtful. And of course I didn’t write it down so I can’t find it exactly but it was something like “the live you live everyday is the life you live.” It’s not one of those live your dreams motivational quote, its more of a slap in the face saying that gives it to you straight. While you are sitting there thinking of everything you can do and be, you are what you are doing that day, how you live each day. You can sit there and imagine your life one way but unless you are doing it and working on it daily then its just your imagination.

So, there are my puzzle pieces…not sure what the whole picture is or I may never know…but that is what has been on my heart this week. What are your puzzle pieces?

**whoops, hit publish instead of schedule and its only Sunday…oh well, an extra day to ponder:)

five on friday | confessions of a black friday virgin

Friday, November 27th, 2009

fiveI’ll admit, I’ve ran into a Toys R Us to grab something the morning after Thanksgiving around 9 or so but never have I left out in the dark to grab some deals and deal with the crowds. I’m not sure what got into me but this morning I struck out on my own to have some fun. I had my relatively short list with only one “must have” item. No, it wasn’t the latest electronic, the flat screen tv, or some giant toy. Nope, it was Hungry Hungry Hippo:) I knew I definitely wanted to get that on sale at Walmart. Other than that, I was going for the experience. Here are a few things I observed/thought of while I popped my black friday shopping cherry.

1. Walmart was my second stop. It was when I realized there was a method you could have in the madness and start over analyzing people’s behavior (its the sociologist in me:) ). A call to my sister (avid Black Friday shopper) who told me that you have to go in with a game plan and be prepared to show some fierceness and attitude as you shop confirmed that to be a true black friday shopper one must have a gameplan and some attitude (and maybe a cart but more on that later!)

Things I noticed about Walmart:
-The registers were definitely not as crazy and the lines not nearly as long (it was about 6:30 or 7 when I was there though since this was my second stop so that may have been a factor)
-People who were shopping were SO much nicer than at Target. People were helping others find things and the holiday spirit was must more noticeable.
-Walmart;’s cardboard bins are made like crap and definitely can’t stand up to the hundreds of people grabbing at them. They were strewn about like a broken christmas ball.

2. Target was my first stop and it was CRAZY! Buggies were at a premium and the lines literally went past the jewelry section. And people were MEAN! As I walked aimlessly through the electronic section having visions of people breaking into a Christmas song (what can I say, this is my first time, I was black friday shopping delusional) some lady started cussing the poor Target guy out because the line took so long. Back to reality for me:) I really thought about going over to her and just being like “Merry Christmas” just to see what she would say.

Things I noticed about Target:
- The deals weren’t as good in my opinion as Walmart so I’m not sure why it was crazier.
-The people (not the salespeople, the shoppers) were SO much ruder! I’m talking line cutting, cursing, and just generally not smiling and no holiday spirit. It was when an older man literally walked past me to get to the register because he apparently thought the long line behind him wasn’t meant for him that I realized that this is game on day, not a day for singing carols in line.
-Target was out of a TON of stuff…Walmart wasn’t ( and I was at Target a good hour and a half before I went to Walmart)
-Target’s cardboard boxes to hold the stuff were definitely stronger and nicer looking (but didn’t hold as much which was probably the issue with the above)

3. If you have any ailment at all, you may want to consider a motorized cart. I got behind one of those things and it was like the parting of the sea. She was not afraid to use that thing and people knew it. I just followed her along for a while and it cut my time to the toy department in about 1/2.

Also, a regular cart can be a advantage and disadvantage…
-advantages: blocking device for line cutters, accidentally bumping into someone for a little vengeance (mean, I know…I would never do that), blocking off a good deal so you can get the one you want
-disadvantages: I mean, really, who wants to get through a crowd with a four feet protrusion in front of you.

4. After your shopping it is the perfect time for some yummy breakfast. I opted for Chikfila, my sister sent me a text with a picture of tacos with the message “intense shopping=tacos at 8am” so its whatever floats your boat:)

5. I sprung (sprang?) for a little Christmasy fun and bought Merry Madagascar to bring home. We saw it on TV the other night and fell in love with it. So, we had some penguin fun and watched it and decorated the house. Fun times!

So that is my observations from this mornings adventures. I have to go food shopping later today so hopefully it wont be crazy there too:) How did your shopping go?

a gatlinburg wedding | Sarah + Ben

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Being a photographer is an honor, to be asked to photograph a wedding is a task not to be taken lightly. It’s especially that way when its a destination wedding, a small and intimate wedding set in a chapel in Gatlinburg. You feel thankful that the family included you to capture such a special time.

Sarah and Ben were married in Gatlinburg, TN at a beautiful chapel in their destination wedding. It was so much fun to be the photographer at this wedding. The chapel in Gatlinburg was picture perfect and Sarah and Ben and their family were so welcoming. They even decided to see each other before the ceremony to get some photography in before the sun set…love that! Enjoy the pictures!

a flower girl

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Since moving to Knoxville we have met some great friends. Friends who have supported my photography business and dreams more than I could ever imagine. Friends who have entrusted me with their beautiful weddings and memories.

So it was an honor to have Lena be a flower girl in Jenny and Brian’s wedding. Because I had not gotten too many images on the day of the wedding of Lena in all her flower girl beautifulness (I know it’s not a word but I’m rolling with it:) ) I decided a couple weeks ago to get her all dressed up again in an effort to capture it all. So we headed out on a nice warm November day in Knoxville and got some photographs of her, well, ignoring the camera:)

Also wanted to mention we got Lena’s dress at mygirldress.com. They were great to work with and have the cutest dresses!

marie + scott | a sneak peek

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Marie and Scott live in a beautiful part of Knoxville Tennessee, complete with a river in the front and deer in the back. Such a great place for photographs! So I made my way out there to take some portraits for them! I just love taking photographs in the fall…look at the awesome colors! And being near the mountains here in Knoxville makes it easy to love the fall!

So, I love Marie for so many reasons but my new fave reason is that she busted out a smize and a little ANTM posing! Loved it! For those that don’t know what a smize is, you need to watch America’s Next Top Model…it is awesome, outrageous, and gives you good ideas for your next session with me:)
