there are a few things close to my heart. one is missions. anything that has to do with reaching out and impacting your world. missions isn’t just going to some exotic location and living in a hut, it’s stepping out your door in the morning and deciding to make a difference, even in the little things.

when my sister and I were little, I think I was about 7, we would get these pamphlets on adoption and such at our church and talk about the want of a sibling. then we would strategically lay these pamphlets around hoping mom and dad would get the hint. kids I tell you…I actually have never even told my parents this so I’m not even sure they noticed our covert operation:) obviously, our plan folded with no sibling to be had but my parents gave us something even better-shortly after that we moved to serve overseas and in a number of Asian countries I got to experience hands on with these orphans, their day to day, how they lived, how they still loved life even in the midst of things, and go play with them and befriend them. It was eye opening, inspiring, heartbreaking, life changing for me-all rolled into one. Years later, I would have the opportunity to work with kids, teenagers, here in our own state of TN who were up for adoption and living with the state as their parents and seeing the struggle and heartache of just wanting to know they are loved. It’s sad when the closest thing a kid has in their life is you, their social worker.

adoption is missions. it is changing the world. a child’s life that will be so impacted by having a place in this world and knowing they are loved. that is huge! our friends, Greg and Jessica, are in the midst of adopting a little girl, Claire, from Taiwan. This cost is huge. They are accepting donations with some sweet prizes to be had (mmm, can you say Chikfila for a year?!) Go check out their website for a list of prizes and to donate.

Also, if you think adoption may be your mission, check out Bethany (an awesome adoption service for both USA and international adoption!)

Freedom Spirit Festival (knoxville event photographer)

Monday, August 17th, 2009

This Friday, down on Market Square in Knoxvegas, I will be the event photographer for Freedom Spirit Festival. There will be tons of stuff to do for the adults and the kiddo’s including art, music, children’s workshops, lectures, tea garden (yay!), yoga, etc. Stop on by and say hi! I’ll be wandering around throughout the day getting some fun pics but will also have a space right next to the fountains that you can find me at. I’ll share pics of the day next week but wanted to put this on here so you Knoxvillian’s are in the know:)

for you, my daughter

Friday, August 14th, 2009

two years ago you came into this world. you took your time getting here and did it on your own terms, two weeks late. i have a feeling this trend will continue:) independent in your own way and at the same time wanting to be in someone’s arms all the time. from the very first night you were a snuggler. i love how you curl up right under my left arm. always my left. and now you tell me when you want to snuggle and say “sit” and pat the back of the couch. how just after an hour, I’ll come in the door and you run up to me saying “mama” with the biggest smile and hug, like you haven’t seen me in days. these are the things that one day you will grow out of and here, on your second birthday, I want to put in writing to hold on to them.

i love your spirit. we joke about it because you are always on the go and we’ve never had the pleasure of enjoying a child who will sit in a cart in the store but that is something about you I would never give up. I love that you put your hands in the air and close your eyes, just to enjoy the wind. I love that you instinctively know how to be gentle with baby dolls and eggs but then at the same time find it hilarious to screech at the top of you lungs so Tabu (the cat) will jump up on the mantle. I love that you already help me cook. and how sitting at the edge of the sink playing in the water and bubbles can entertain you for hours. and among other things, i love that your blocks have to be in a straight line but then you always have to knock them down.

one day you will look back at this and I hope you can see a sampling of what you were like. I hope that your wonderful spirit continues to blossom and that you enjoy life to its fullest. I hope you see the love the your dad and I have for you, how you have made our life complete. and I hope you will always enjoy the wind.

happy birthday, my daughter.

Love, mommy

five
off to shoot a wedding today in Jefferson City so I thought we would do something fun for the five this week:) I come from a family of creativity. We all have different areas that we prefer but all 4 of us have a way of being creative and expressing it. Thus, Etsy is a fave not only to find awesome homemade stuff and supporting small businesses but also for the great inspiration! The other day I was working with Samaritan Hands and needed some inspiration on their new look and logo. Where did I turn? Etsy! Just to get the juices flowing:)

So here is to our creativity and juices!

1. you can shop local. luckyroni : a knoxville local with lots of cute characters…including robots!

2. you can shop for a gift. Love this one from khamm75! Wouldn’t this be a cool present for a newborn!

3. you can shop for a cause. Etsy has become a source of fundraising for some. This page sells Ethiopian inspired necklaces where all proceeds go to the orphanage. So you can get your Christmas shopping done and impact the world:)

4. you can shop for random things. Scroll through the categories and you will have some fun. A whole category for robots for example:) or the best, taxidermy. or the weird category. gotta love it. Check this one out for fun…you know you want one:)

5. you can shop for photo/camera stuff! This is a fave. I love some of these and couldn’t narrow it down…so I thought you photog’s would enjoy a little bit of a sampling.

Check out this one, says Capture Life. Love that.

Then you gotta love the “I shoot people” one.

Then my fave…because it completely captures how I feel about life and my camera…to wander with purpose and capture life….because real life is art. I only pray that my life is that. If you need a gift idea for me, that is a great one:)

happy friday!

gosh, I just love her.

a first

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Her curly hair. I love that about her. However, It was getting to be quite the fro in the morning though and often required detangling and some pulling. Plus, she had a little curly rat tail in the back! And although I’m sure she was ok about rocking the 80′s rat tail, the mama wanted to stay in the current decade:)

So Sheri at Salon Resplendent helped us out and cut off just a tad to help with the frizzies and fro’s:) Thanks Sheri for being awesome! She had quite a good time but I’m guessing it was because she got to sit in Nana’s lap and eat chocolate at 9am:)
